Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down
The snipers are out there…waiting. Waiting to shoot down your pride, hamper your progress, and destroy your purpose. Waiting to take shots at your new ideas, deflate your lofty goals, and destroy your unreasonable dreams. Their aim is your heart and mind, along with any place else they can make it hurt, using your shortfalls and self-doubt as their ammunition. And all along, it is their own desperate sense of self-loathing, lingering insecurities, and missed opportunities that drive them to pull that reassuring trigger. To them I say: Take. The f*king. Shot. Seriously, just take it. Take the shot, because more times than not, I’m on the move and you’re going to miss. Take the shot to remind me to keep going. Get some hits even, because the occasional hit will ignite me, expose where I need work, and keep me hungry. Fire away, I don’t mind, because when you pull the trigger, you commit to exposing who you are, what you fear, where you are weak, and when life makes you uncomfortable, all of which I truly hope you someday overcome.Don’t let the bastards get you down. They’re always going to be out there, just waiting for a chance to take that shot at you; because it’s easier to take a shot at someone else, than it is for them to take a look at the person in the mirror. Expect it. Every endeavor, every sacrifice, and every triumph will always be riddled with the bullets of those not daring enough to confront who they are, in order to realize who they could be. Let’s face it, none of us are bulletproof, but we are all capable of surviving the hits along the way, just muster the courage to keep going and it will all be worth it in the end.

We all have experienced that feeling of the chase. Whether it’s chasing what we believe is the ideal life, a fulfilling career, or personal goals. Maybe we’re even chasing something that has already happened; a time in our life when we felt we were at the pinnacle of living, or what we’re capable of achieving, and we either fall into a constant state of reliving the past, or chasing how it made us feel. But is the chase just going to leave you spinning your wheels? Maybe what we need to do is create instead. The word “chase” implies you’re a step behind, that you’re in a constant state of falling short, or that you’re following a path created by someone else. The chase is rooted in ambiguity and fueled by hope, which, as Jim Carrey once explained, “Hope is a beggar.” Don’t depend on the chase to create the life you want, or the one you once had. Put the control back in your own hands, take responsibility for your future, and go out and create, or re-create, the life you want to live.Let’s stop chasing and let’s start creating. Creating is laying out a plan…you’re plan. Creating is ignoring the useless things people say and think while you execute that plan, while using the constructive criticism to your advantage. Creating is taking risks, with no real failure, only learning, growing, and refining. And creating is taking ownership over your life, so you never have to be a slave to the chase ever again. So exit the chase for a more promising path, drawn on a road map of your own choosing, and start living the life everyone else wants to chase for themselves.

The Struggle Is Real
You will never figure out who you are and what you’re made of in the midst of success. The real you won’t surface when life is calm, cool, and comfortable. You will only see the true image of who you are when you allow yourself to experience the struggle. Whether it’s on the way up, or on the way down, the struggle is there to show you, prove to you, or remind you, exactly what your capable of, which will always exceed where you’re at, and what you thought.
The struggle is real. It brings out the realness in all of us. When we are just starting out, it shows us what real work looks like and that we always have more to give. When we start reaching our goals, it shows us the real value is not in the achievement, it’s in the work it took to get there. And when we think we are at the top of our game, and we start getting a little arrogant, complacent, or even lazy, it brings us back to reality, shows us humility, and can reignite that fire to achieve through adversity.
Don’t fear your struggle, be real with it. Whatever your struggle is, don’t look at it in terms of what it is keeping you from, look at it in terms of what it is giving you, because it is giving you so much more than just a hard time. It is giving perspective to your life, value to your achievements, and a reality check to your ego, which are all essential pieces to the puzzle of success. If you are in the struggle, embrace it. If you are hiding from it, go find it. And if you don’t think you need it, that’s when you need it the most. The path to your dreams is built on reality, and paved by the struggle, so take every step with pride, and go get what you’re really here for. – CPT Ryan

Whether it’s the goals we want to achieve, a life we see for ourselves, or simply wanting to escape our current situation, our minds can often get away from where we’re at and who we are. We become so focused on where we want to be, and all of the problems just getting there could solve for us, we start covering up who we are in order to fit the narrative of that place we see in our mind. This can all lead to feeling perpetually unfulfilled as you start obtaining the “what” without understanding your “why”.“Wherever you go, there you are” as Confucius put it. Or in other words, you can run, you can hide, and you can fake the funk all you want, but at the end of the day, no matter where you are and what you do, it’s still you behind that mask, waiting for you to face yourself. Chase your dreams, pursue your goals, and work like hell to improve your situation, but don’t just do it to run from yourself. Do it to confront yourself.Live your life unmasked, free yourself from the façades, and start dealing with who, what, and where you are so you can start becoming who you want to be, doing what you’re meant to do, where you want to do it. You can escape the people, places, and things, but you can never escape yourself. So why try? You are always going to be there. So you might as well get used to yourself, because you can never be happy with where you are, until you can learn to embrace who you are. – CPT Ryan

The Space Between
Determining the space between you and your goals is as simple as looking at that space between your ears. Everything you have ever determined to hold you back from your dreams was either created, or has lived, in that space. Those people who hold you back, the reasons you “can’t” do something, the setbacks you experience, and all the chips stacked against you, may very well exist, but their power is only derived and empowered by your mind.
Life is a game of inches, and everything you’ve ever wanted from life starts with taking control of that six inch span from one ear to another. If you give life, people, obstacles, and setbacks a single inch of that space, they are all going to take a mile…along with your self-confidence, your will, and your determination. There will be times where it feels like you have surrendered that space to life, along with your hopes, dreams, and future. But the first step in taking back those inches lies in having the courage to simply decide.
The power to decide is all you need to arm yourself with in order to take control of the most important six inches in your journey. Just decide to no longer give power to those who hold you down. Just decide to finally go after that dream job or career you’ve always wanted. Just decide to cast aside all of your doubts, fears, and insecurities in the pursuit of what truly makes you happy. And just decide that, in all reality, you are the owner and sole proprietor of that space between you and where you want to be, and the process of owning that space starts an inch at a time. ~CPT Ryan
