Blind Clarity

It will not always be clear. You will not always know what it is you want, what your vision looks like, or what your purpose is. It may feel as though you are just blindly wandering along, not really knowing if anything you are doing is really going to help some higher cause, or take you to a place of fulfillment. These feelings are inevitable, and they are just as much a part of the process as defining your passion, your purpose, and your plan. It is in these times where you’ll find the importance of, at a minimum, prescribing to an ideal.
Although goals, plans, and visions can provide us comfort and motivation in the darkest of hours, just because you don’t have them doesn’t mean you are altogether lost. Sometimes the only guiding light you will have is an ideal, or a concept which is completely formless, but holds a deep meaning to you somehow. As you embed these principles into all that you do, slowly a vision will form through opportunity, and that vision will eventually give way to passion, which will power your purpose. You may even know exactly what it is you want to do, but it doesn’t exist yet, in which case you need to derive courage from those ideals, so you can go out and create exactly what you see in your mind.
You don’t always have to know exactly where you’re going in order to know you are eventually going to get there, and your fire doesn’t always need a blueprint in order to burn. Don’t settle for mediocrity in the face of blindness; just because you may not be able to see your future today, doesn’t mean it won’t exist, and just because it doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean you can’t create it. So set chase to that which cannot yet be seen, led only by a trust in a concept, and a passion for change, and open your eyes to a reality you never imagined possible. – CPT Ryan

Chasing Creation

We all have experienced that feeling of the chase. Whether it’s chasing what we believe is the ideal life, a fulfilling career, or personal goals. Maybe we’re even chasing something that has already happened; a time in our life when we felt we were at the pinnacle of living, or what we’re capable of achieving, and we either fall into a constant state of reliving the past, or chasing how it made us feel. But is the chase just going to leave you spinning your wheels? Maybe what we need to do is create instead.
The word “chase” implies you’re a step behind, that you’re in a constant state of falling short, or that you’re following a path created by someone else. The chase is rooted in ambiguity and fueled by hope, which, as Jim Carrey once explained, “Hope is a beggar.” Don’t depend on the chase to create the life you want, or the one you once had. Put the control back in your own hands, take responsibility for your future, and go out and create, or re-create, the life you want to live.
Let’s stop chasing and let’s start creating. Creating is laying out a plan…you’re plan. Creating is ignoring the useless things people say and think while you execute that plan, while using the constructive criticism to your advantage. Creating is taking risks, with no real failure, only learning, growing, and refining. And creating is taking ownership over your life, so you never have to be a slave to the chase ever again. So exit the chase for a more promising path, drawn on a road map of your own choosing, and start living the life everyone else wants to chase for themselves.

Out Of The Darkness

No different than the night sky reveals the stars, the moon, and the wonders of the universe, the dark times you encounter in your life will reveal a side of you which you never knew existed. We fear the dark. We fear what it represents, we fear what it shrouds, and we fear the blindness that comes with it. Conversely, we love the light because for its predictability, normalcy, and far reaching sight. When it comes down to it, darkness exposes a vulnerability which we are extremely uncomfortable with, but in reality it exposes so much more.
The light shrouds from us what we are truly capable of. It hides our strength, our will, our determination, and even our compassion for others. You are going to go through dark times whether you like it or not, whether you’re prepared or not, and whether or not it’s convenient for you. You can hide from it, ignore it, try to get your friends to face it with you, but in the end it’s on you to walk into the darkness and search for what lies beyond its veil. It is there, far from the comforting rays of light, where you will find what you are actually made of.

You were not built just to merely exist, you were literally born to survive, adapt, overcome, and repeat. Whatever dark times you may be going through right now, or will go through in the future, do just that…go through them. Don’t get caught just staring into the darkness, because it’s all you will ever see. Go through it. There will always be growth, there will always be lessons, and there will always be light on the other side, but you have to be willing to go through it…albeit one small step at a time.

The Space Between

Determining the space between you and your goals is as simple as looking at that space between your ears. Everything you have ever determined to hold you back from your dreams was either created, or has lived, in that space. Those people who hold you back, the reasons you “can’t” do something, the setbacks you experience, and all the chips stacked against you, may very well exist, but their power is only derived and empowered by your mind.
Life is a game of inches, and everything you’ve ever wanted from life starts with taking control of that six inch span from one ear to another. If you give life, people, obstacles, and setbacks a single inch of that space, they are all going to take a mile…along with your self-confidence, your will, and your determination. There will be times where it feels like you have surrendered that space to life, along with your hopes, dreams, and future. But the first step in taking back those inches lies in having the courage to simply decide.
The power to decide is all you need to arm yourself with in order to take control of the most important six inches in your journey. Just decide to no longer give power to those who hold you down. Just decide to finally go after that dream job or career you’ve always wanted. Just decide to cast aside all of your doubts, fears, and insecurities in the pursuit of what truly makes you happy. And just decide that, in all reality, you are the owner and sole proprietor of that space between you and where you want to be, and the process of owning that space starts an inch at a time. ~CPT Ryan
